Personal development involves knowledge, attitudes, skills, relationships, behaviour and strength of character that can be utilised in and outside the classroom. This involves thinking processes, managing emotions, values and relationships along with a range of life skills that assist young people is coping with the challenges of everyday living.

At Kings Langley School, we believe that the development of character is key to higher educational attainment, good mental health and well-being, and better prospects and outcomes in the labour market. Our aim is to ensure that all students have equal entitlement and access to these opportunities. The experiences and opportunities within our curriculum enable students to flourish in all areas of their lives, developing into well-rounded, empathetic and kind beings who are able to contribute and shape society and the wider world, whilst respecting and supporting those who live in it.

A focus on core values, such as self-regulation, stickability and empathy, are fundamental to this intent which sits alongside a strong vocational curriculum of visits, trips, work experience and visiting speakers, these support the growth and enhancement of students’ cultural capital. These activities are interwoven to enhance the official curriculum with the aim to not only support students’ understanding but look to extend the depth of their knowledge. Additional opportunities are offered through an extensive and exciting extra-curricular programme which is updated on a regular basis. Students are encouraged to show compassion and kindness by getting involved with local charities such as volunteering or providing social action i.e. giving service to others. Alongside these learning and developmental opportunities sits our personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) programme, and our careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) work, which combine to support our aim in developing students who can succeed in life beyond secondary school.
